Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy Certificate Program for Youth with Depression, Anxiety, and Comorbid Conditions

This program is full and closed to additional registration. 

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on restructuring thoughts, feelings and behaviors to improve mood and reduce anxieties. This two-part certificate program will provide you with two days of engaging discussion and training on the numerous fundamental techniques and skills utilized in successful CBT with youth who experience depression, anxiety and co-morbid conditions. You will leave prepared to implement new skills with clients and their families. The second part of the program provides 10 hours of additional training through five two-hour group conference calls to advance mastery of skills and improve client outcomes.

Dates of Program

1.  Two-day session: July 17 & 18, 2017 in from 8:45am - 4:30pm each day. The location is the UB Center for Tomorrow, Flint Rd. & Maple Rd., Amherst, NY. Driving directions. Full description is in the brochure.

2. Group Phone Sessions:  Five two-hour group phone sessions will be held from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 7, Sept. 21, Oct. 5, Oct. 19, and Nov. 2, 2017. Content will cover application of the material with your clients including evaluation, conceptualization, treatment planning, engagement, therapeutic alliance, and case presentation discussions.

Eligibility, Objectives and Certificate of Completion

Eligibility: This clinical certificate program is open to professionals with a master's level clinical degree who are currently treating youth in mental health services.

July 17 & 18, 2017 Course Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify diagnostic criteria, etiology, prevalence and associated features of youth depression and anxiety disorders, including comorbid disorders with diverse populations across multiple social work and human service settings;
  2. Recognize the essential elements of evidenced-based, CBT treatment for youth depression, anxiety disorders, and comorbid conditions as well as ethical issues that apply to the use of evidence-based treatments;
  3. Evaluate the function and use of CBT techniques including: psychoeducation; mindfulness; somatic management; mood monitoring; behavioral activation; cognitive restructuring; exposure therapy; problem solving; social skills training, behavioral chain analysis, etc.
  4. Apply motivational enhancement techniques and methods to build a therapeutic alliance in accordance with social work values.
  5. Develop methods to involve parents and collaterals in the youth’s treatment and how to effectively engage in an interdisciplinary approach.

Group Phone Sessions: Content will cover application of the material with your clients including evaluation, conceptualization, treatment planning, engagement, therapeutic alliance, and case presentation discussions.

Certificate of Completion: This certificate program is a combination of two days of training followed by ten hours of group conference calls on cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) designed to advance your skills. Completion does not represent that you have 'CBT Certification' or are 'CBT Certified'. You will receive a frameable certificate of completion for the training program if you meet all of the completion requirements specified in the brochure. This is a separate document from the CEU certificates. Full attendance is required for all components.


David M. Pratt, MSW, PhD, is in private practice and Director of the Mood Management Program at the WNY Psychotherapy Services in Amherst, NY. He has over 35 years of experience as a mental health professional working with children, adolescents and families. Dr. Pratt utilizes evidence-based, cognitive-behavioral and family therapy approaches in treatment. He specializes in the treatment of depression, self-harm and suicide prevention, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and disruptive behavioral disorders in youth. Dr. Pratt has conducted numerous trainings/workshops in cognitive-behavioral therapy for youth depression and anxiety disorders at local, state, national and international forums.  Previously, Dr. Pratt was the Principal Psychologist at the WNY Children's Psychiatric Center, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UB and Adjunct Professor/Lecturer, UB Counseling, School and Educational Psychology department.
