Turning on the news on any given day can be a very scary prospect. Schools, agencies, restaurants, outdoor concerts and sporting events: it seems more and more difficult to find places where people feel safe. Balancing safety planning with conducting everyday human service business is a challenge that takes trauma-informed thinking to reassure your workforce, clients, students, and families. This presentation will look at the characteristics of mass violence/casualty incidents and threats in order to tailor your organization’s response. You will benefit from learning from how large mass violence incidents have unfolded across the US and the world, and what best practices have been developed to help concretely and emotionally manage reactions to these incidents and take steps to return to serving clients, families, and students. This course will consist of lecture, discussion and exercises, culminating in a large group response exercise during which you will put into action what you have learned during the day.

Learning Objectives:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of how a mass violence/casualty incident or threat will impact the daily functioning of an organization, and what steps will assist in alleviating intense emotion and allowing for taking steps forward as an organization;
2. Apply during activities how trauma-informed principles establish the basis for response planning and action;
3. Develop an understanding of how mass violence/casualty incidents impact individuals and groups in multiple domains of reaction and how this understanding will direct response planning and action.
