Joining Forces–UB Project

Joining Forces–UB (formerly Joining Forces: UB Partnership for Excellence in Veteran Care) is a partnership between the School of Social Work and School of Nursing, developed to provide excellence in education and training for UB students and health care providers serving veterans and military families in the WNY region.

The impetus for this project is the national initiative, “Joining Forces,” launched by First Lady Michelle Obama and Jill Biden in 2010 to mobilize all sectors of society to give our service members, veterans and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. Joining Forces–UB brings this national initiative to the University at Buffalo (UB) by capitalizing on the strengths and resources of the SSW and SON in partnership with local community organizations serving veterans and/or military families.

As part of the Joining Forces–UB Project, a Veteran and Military Family (VMF) enhanced curricular focus has been developed in the MSW program within the SSW. The focus is a combination of coursework and field training that prepares social workers to work with veterans and military families. Similarly, a VMF focus has been developed within the SON’s DNP program.

Initial funding for the project was provided by the UB Provost’s 3E Fund for February 2013 - June 2015. Additional funds are being sought to support ongoing activities and to continue the project beyond 2015.
