My concentration has been on the well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth. I think sexual orientation and gender identity are integral aspects of who we are as human beings. Rights for GLBT people are human rights. All of the issues that impact adolescents in general impact some GLBT adolescents but then they have the added trauma perhaps of rejection and abandonment because of their sexual orientation and/or gender identity.
I am involved with the Buffalo Public Schools on the development of a new survey which will be an important source of data on the health risk behavior of adolescents. I also helped develop and pilot the curriculum of the inter-professional education collaborative practice, an ongoing initiative among UB’s health-related schools to bring students together with people from across the professions. Such practice has shown to increase patient safety and produce better outcomes for patients and their families.
