I can recognize it as a form of trauma when a 14-year-old girl in Africa already has a child and the tragedy of having to leave school. I can also appreciate the multiple challenges of someone who lives in a poor neighborhood of Buffalo who experiences first-hand gang violence and all of the deprivations that occur when one is very poor and has limited opportunities. How do we learn from that experience and how do we create plans for preventions so that things like that are not repeated. That is a human rights issue.

I try to help students gain connection to the individual and the individual’s family, and how they interact with their larger neighborhood and community. I really try to help students understand their part in influencing the culture of an organization and its footprint, and that by their actions they can inform the direction of and potential that communities have.
