Description

Saturday Training!

Discount price for our trauma certificate participants and graduates is $60.

Adoption impacts more individuals than many realize. Children, birth families, and adoptive families who continue to feel the effects of the process years later appear in many service systems including private practice therapy. This workshop will provide an understanding of the unique challenges inherent in adoption and discuss the importance of a trauma-informed, non-judgmental approach utilizing positive adoption language. Research shows that trauma changes the very structure of a child’s brain and a child’s brain affects behavior. Trauma also impacts parenting. Parenting children with challenging behaviors may bring up turmoil or trauma from a parent’s own childhood. In addition, feelings of grief and loss do not end with adoption. There is often a lasting impact on both children and parents as they re-grieve the losses they have experienced. Megan will cover the unique challenges that occur pre and post adoption for individuals (i.e. fertility, birth parents, foster care, domestic, transracial, and international adoptions) and provide participants with resources to share with their clients.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify who is impacted by grief and loss in adoption;
• List three essential components of post adoption support;
• Use positive adoption language in a trauma-informed, non-judgmental approach;
• Identify at least two resource services available to children and or families involved in the adoption process.

Research: The Donaldson Adoption Institute (https://adoptioninstitute.org/issue-areas) conducted original research to fill gaps in knowledge and inform best practices. The Rudd Adoption Research Program (https://umass.edu/ruddchair) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst aims to contribute to evidence-based practice and to provide research-based information that will influence policy (see “Research” and “Future of Adoption” pages. The Child Welfare Information Gateway (https://bit.ly/2XwtN5Z) provides a number of fact sheets and other publications on adoption based on research.
