A kinship caregiver is a family member caring for a child that is not biologically their own. In NY, there are an estimated 179,000 caregivers, 131,000 of whom are grandparents. Many others are aunts and uncles. Challenges for kinship caregivers include:
• Often do not have supports (and may not be aware supports exist) in accessing general services, legal assistance, and other specialized kinship services;
• Barriers to eligibility for financial assistance, child care, and school enrollment, as well as to accessing other service systems;
• Custodial rights may be less secure;
• Special challenges in maintaining family relationships because, unlike non-relative foster parents, they still are connected to birth parents;
• Children in their care may have numerous adverse and traumatic family experiences (and providing kinship care can be very stressful for the caregivers).
This morning presentation covers the needs of the kinship population in NY, common issues faced by caregivers (primarily in terms of financial and legal barriers), and an overview of the statewide, local, and specialized services available to them. Content will be presented in a trauma-informed approach that stresses safety, collaboration, trustworthiness, empowerment and choice as part of the process.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand the concept of kinship care and the importance of a trauma-informed approach for children and caregivers;
• Recognize the common issues faced by caregivers and what assistance is available;
• Identify statewide, local and specialized services available to families;
• Apply information to interactions with clients and recognize how to refer to supports.
