Please join the dynamic team of Denise Krause, LCSW-R, and Sue Green, LCSW, for the “what” and the “how” on integration of Solution Focused approaches and Trauma-Informed Care (SF-TIC). This workshop will be beneficial to agency administrators, service providers, and other professionals working with trauma survivors. SF-TIC offers an innovative and comprehensive approach to individuals (colleagues and clients) in our systems of care. Trauma-Informed Care has been instituted in mental health, education, legal, and social service delivery systems. It is significantly aligned with the core tenets and techniques of solution focused practice (SFP). These models emphasize engagement, empowerment, and choice. The integration of SFP and TIC offers an alternative to the problem-solving method frequently employed in communities of practice. The SF-TIC approach mitigates trauma re-exposure by developing a care delivery system that is trauma-informed and oriented toward future potential. Anchored in experiences with urban and rural organizations, it offers a model for developing and sustaining key personnel in trauma-informed systems. The format is grounded in the tenets of solution-focused practice and the principles of trauma-informed care. The presentation will demonstrate how assuming a collaborative stance through viewing the “other” as the expert and employing solution focused skills both honors the trauma survivor’s experience and instills hope.

Learning Objectives:

1. Recognize how solution focused approaches can create trauma-informed environments;
2. Explain specific solution focused skills that can anchor the five values/principles of trauma-informed care;
3. Use solution focused skills to create trauma-informed environments;
4. Identify ways organizations can develop key personnel to sustain the integration of solution focused and trauma-informed practices;
5. Discuss the application of aspects of solution focused trauma-informed care that you will use in you own work moving forward.

Research: Solution-focused trauma-informed care (SF-TIC) is an innovative approach that combines the trauma-informed framework with solution-focused skills and language to effectively avoid re-traumatization. Future research of SF-TIC as an integrated approach is needed.
