Participants will learn a basic understanding of the field of art therapy, its research support and how trauma-focused art therapy has been historically used in the treatment of PTSD and trauma related disorders. Expressive art therapy will be explored as an integrative tool, with the potential of increasing the effectiveness of a trauma-focused therapy. Developing an understanding of how creative art experience can be used metaphorically and expressively for the development of client engagement, self-regulation skills, sensory resourcing, building affect tolerance, cognitive restructuring, and trauma processing, will be demonstrated. Participants will engage in hands on learning to develop an applicable understanding and comfort level with this approach. Caveats and precautions will be explored with respect to different client populations and art materials used.
