Some adult males are mandated into treatment by the criminal justice system. Others may be may be persuaded to come into treatment by a loved one, and some voluntarily initiate seeking relief from their struggles with depression, anxiety, substance use, relationship challenges, etc. Many may not bring up their trauma history because they do not recognize it or do not want to talk about it. Gender stereotyping can also make men feel that they need to be strong, not let the past affect them, and handle life on their own. This training will focus on the strengths based, non-pathologizing, solution focused approach to treatment. Solution Focused Brief Therapy is a competency-based model, which minimizes emphasis on past failings and problems, and instead focuses on strengths and previous successes. While men in treatment may have trauma histories, many are always not ready or interested in working on issues related to trauma. A solution-focused approach focuses on what they want to achieve through the work, rather than on the problem(s) that made them seek help. Often, they simply want to feel better quickly related to the concerns that brought them into treatment.
In this training, you will learn how to use a solution focused brief therapy approaches to create a therapeutic relationship with male clients for effective treatment. We will discuss how to use cutting-edge, Positive Psychology and Solution-Focused research to address the needs of male trauma survivors. Participants will be exposed to other evidenced-based models including Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and mindfulness can be brought into a collaborative treatment plan through a solution focused approach. Discussion and activities will focus on ways to increase the presence of resiliency factors in trauma survivors, appropriate and effective validation, and development of solution focused treatment to enhance engagement, retention, treatment and discharge.

Both male and female clinicians will leave with greater confidence in working with men who have trauma histories. You will have tools and language that can be put immediately into practice to help male adult clients get unstuck and move ahead in a collaborative treatment plan using solution focused process.

Case examples will be discussed with an opportunity to apply content.
