Description

This training is for all levels of staff, including managers and senior administrators who want to take the next steps in implementing trauma-informed care (TIC) at the agency, organizational and system level. Content will provide an intermediate level, "digestive learning process" focusing on the trauma-informed organizational model developed by the Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care (ITTIC) that provides a framework for agencies, organizations and systems to facilitate and sustain trauma-informed culture change.

While it is important for individuals to be trauma-informed, it is also critical for agencies, organizations and systems to operationalize the trauma-informed approach in all aspects of their functioning. Trauma-informed culture change often takes multiple years to achieve and thus requires a “big picture“ plan to efficiently facilitate. ITTIC’s trauma-informed organizational model provides the framework, assessments and tools for any agency, organization and system to plan for, implement and sustain trauma-informed change. Many parts of your agency, organization or system likely already reflect aspects of a trauma-informed approach. In order to help you identify what is already in place and how to move forward, the model consists of stages, key development areas and domains of consideration.

The beginning of the training will provide a review of the trauma-informed framework, including: re-traumatization, the three levels of trauma practice (trauma-informed, trauma-sensitive and trauma-specific), and the five guiding values and principles of TIC proposed by Harris and Fallot (2001): safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.

The training will then delve into the trauma-informed organizational model developed by ITTIC by first providing an overview of the stages, key development areas and domains of consideration. Through the use of various activities and discussions, you will take both a big picture look at your agency, organization or system, as well as consider the specific nuances in each of the stages and key development areas. The activities in the training will assist you in identifying what is working, where it may make sense to focus your efforts, and help you build on those strengths to plan for future implementation steps. Discussions throughout the training will provide concrete examples and strategies at the individual and agency, organizational and system level so that you can ensure the enhanced provision of trauma-informed services.

Trauma-informed tools and time to complete them will be provided. You will develop ideas and plans to make manageable changes in your work, and be in a position to take organizational ideas back to the agency, organization or system for discussion, decision making, and ideally implementation planning. Time for discussion will be available in order to learn from the trainers and other participants. Additional resources will be shared, as well as a brief overview of the supports and services available from ITTIC to help you continue the trauma-informed change process.

Learning Objectives:
• Identify areas in your own work and agency, organization or system that already reflect aspects of a trauma-informed approach;
• Assess your agency, organization or system’s use of trauma-informed approaches using the trauma-informed organizational model;
• Identify tools that can be used in the planning, implementation and sustainability of the trauma-informed change process;
• Develop possible action steps that your agency, organization or system can take in order to begin or continue the trauma-informed change process.
