Since 1934, the UB School of Social Work has been advancing the dignity and worth of humankind.
During our yearlong 90th anniversary celebration, we celebrated the school's impact and served our community together.
In addition to the celebratory video above, several alumni and students shared their reflections in honor of our 90th year.
Our fall 2024 issue of Mosaics — the magazine for alumni and friends of the School of Social Work — is dedicated to the anniversary, with stories about our history, generations of alumni, self-care and how faculty, staff and students are making an impact today.
All year long, we marked this milestone through service.
In April, the School of Social Work hosted a day of service in partnership with the City of Buffalo's Operation Clean Sweep initiative. Students, faculty, staff, alumni and field education partners joined together to pick up debris and distribute resources to residents around Masten Park.
In addition to recognizing our 90th anniversary, volunteers dedicated their efforts to the lives lost during the racially fueled massacre in May 2022 at Tops, which was along our clean-up route that day.
We also partnered with Jewish Family Services of WNY during the springtime to support the Refugee Partnership — and planted trees in Buffalo's McCarthy Park with the Tool Library in November.
In October, our alumni, students, faculty, staff and community partners celebrated 90 years of advancing the dignity and worth of humankind in the UB School of Social Work. The evening began with a presentation from award-winning professor, writer, speaker and media host Melissa Harris-Perry — titled, “The Complexity of Equity: Advancing Justice through Social Work” — followed by a networking reception.
During our 75th anniversary, faculty members Denise Krause and Susan Green led the creation of a comprehensive documentary about our history and impact. The project included about 60 interviews with alumni, former deans, UB presidents and faculty members.
