History

Buffalo.

Housed in Parker Hall on UB’s South Campus, the Buffalo Center for Social Research (BCSR) promotes interdisciplinary research that builds on the university's faculty strengths and strategic initiatives.

Steered by the vision of former Dean Nancy J. Smyth, BCSR formed in 2005 with the consolidation of two existing centers:

  • The Center for Research on Urban Social Work Practice, founded in 1998 by then-Dean Lawrence Shulman
  • The Center for Research on Children and Youth, created in 2002 under the direction of Jeannette L. Johnson

Smyth’s vision for the consolidation was to create one center that would have a wider interdisciplinary research scope.

Catherine N. Dulmus, who led the consolidation and established the new center, was named director in December 2005.
