Job Description: The Support Group Facilitator is responsible for facilitation of support group for women diagnosed with ovarian and gynecologic cancer. This facilitator will offer a warm, confidential space to discuss concerns and experiences related to ovarian and gynecologic cancers. They will help the group members connect and discover ways to reduce isolation, and to regain a sense of control, and find hope. I. Support Group Facilitation • Facilitate monthly support group meetings at our office location • Serve as an expert in psychosocial aspects of cancer across the continuum (diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment, long-term survivorship, end of life), but not as an expert in cancer or cancer treatment • Conduct new member interviews and complete intake forms by phone or in person, obtain confidentiality agreements • Build a strong sense of group sharing by listening to feelings and concerns, summarizing themes, and encouraging participation by all group members • Understand when member concerns are beyond group’s ability to assist and suggest appropriate alternative resources • Maintain group management records, including but not limited to group roster, attendance records, annual confidentiality agreements and up-to-date contact information • Draft meeting notes immediately after each session for monthly submission to President with attendance records and updated group contact information • Provide backup coverage for other support groups as needed II. General Program Administration and Direct Service • Serve as an Ovarian Cancer Project “host” for Open House, Major Fundraisers and annual Remembrance Ceremony. Expectations include, but are not limited to, to, introducing speakers, providing introductory remarks that include a brief overview of Ovarian Cancer Project. • Work to build community among all members, staff and others. III. Supervision and Professional Development • Participate in regular 2 hour monthly Social Work Meetings, held the 2nd Thursday of each month from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Ovarian Cancer Project office. • Participate in phone calls or face-to-face meetings with supervisor as needed. • Provide annual documentation of current licensure and malpractice insurance. • Self-study to learn about the organizations programs and services • Initial and ongoing overview of ovarian and gynecologic cancers w/ supervisor • Voluntarily participate in ongoing continuing education opportunities related to psychosocial oncology. • Serve as a voluntary “ambassador” to spread awareness about the Ovarian Cancer Project with in the community.
Required Qualifications: The candidate must hold an advanced degree in Social Work or related field, and have a license as an LCSW or equivalent. Qualifications include: • Prior group facilitation experience • Experience in medical or cancer field • Excellent communication and listening skills – empathy, humor, openness • Warmth and compassion for people living with cancer and their family members • Dependability and reliability • Desire to become familiar with the subject gynecologic cancer and its history and treatments
Preferred Qualifications: Experience w/ cancer patients
