Position Description: AHEC Scholars is a two-year, statewide, “hotspotting” program that that offers current health students the opportunity to participate in a multidisciplinary team to help improve the quality of life for individuals in medically underserved areas. The program consists of clinical, community-based, and online didactic training activities. The online portion of the program will serve as an additional learning tool for students to familiarize themselves on topics designed to augment patient care. Topics include cultural competency, social determinants of health, practice transformation, behavioral health integration, and interprofessional care coordination. As an AHEC Scholar, students will collaborate with health professionals from a local health center to proactively provide health care resources and support to high-need, high-cost patients in the Buffalo community in an effort to reduce the number of avoidable hospitalizations and emergency room visits. Students will also develop, improve, and expand their knowledge and comprehension about barriers to health and the community’s health care needs. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to build a professional network with health care providers through our partnership with the local health center. By exposing students to social, financial, and cultural issues of care, AHEC Scholars aims to support the development of future healthcare professionals who can provide high-quality, patient-centric care to all members in the Buffalo community. Students involved in our program will be receive a stipend at the end of the program year; the amount is still to be determined and is contingent on available funds.
Required Qualifications: Must be a current student in the following accredited allied health or health profession degree/certificate program (i. e Social Work, Nursing, Pharmacy, Pre-Health Public Health)
