Application Process

All application components (including recommendations) must be received by the deadline in order to be considered.

1. Complete the online GrAdMIT application

It's easy to apply to the University at Buffalo using GrAdMIT, our electronic graduate application system.

Be sure to read the drop-down list of application options thoroughly, since each track has a different application form. If you are unsure of which application you need to select, contact us.

On the MPH/MSW application, you will select an MPH program concentration (Health Services Administration or Community Health and Health Behavior) and which school you plan to begin the program in (School of Social Work or School of Public Health and Health Professions).

2. Identify three recommenders

On the application form, you will be asked to provide contact information for three professional references who are best able to assess your potential for graduate-level academic work and for the profession of social work. This includes:

  • Faculty
  • Classroom instructors
  • Academic advisors
  • Current or past employers, supervisors or professional colleagues

Do not use personal friends, relatives, friends of the family or other personal relationship sources. In addition, do not use clients or individuals you provide services to, or therapists or other individuals you receive services from.

GrAdMIT will send emails to recommenders providing them instructions on how to electronically submit their letter of recommendation ONLY AFTER you officially submit the application. Plan ahead to give your references enough time to submit their recommendations before the deadline.

3. Upload unofficial academic transcripts

Copies of transcripts should be uploaded to the GrAdMIT application portal. You must provide transcripts for all previous schools attended at the undergraduate and graduate levels, regardless of whether a degree was received.

If accepted to the degree program, you will be required to submit final official transcripts from all educational institutions you have attended (except from the University at Buffalo). Official transcripts can be mailed to:
University at Buffalo
School of Social Work- Admissions
685 Baldy Hall
Buffalo, NY 14260-1050

4. Upload your personal statement essay

This is a key component of your application. Your essay should reflect strong technical writing and critical thinking skills. Write a full essay answering ALL questions in the MPH/MSW Guidelines for Writing the Personal Statement

5. Submit official GRE scores

The GRE is a required application component for MPH, and is only waived for persons with a doctoral degree (e.g., MD or PhD) from an American university.

  • The GRE must have been taken within five years of your application to the MPH program. It is preferred that you have a minimum score of 500 or 50th percentile for each category (verbal and quantitative) and a minimum of 4.0 or 50th percentile for analytical writing.

The codes for sending your official GRE scores are 2925 for the University at Buffalo and 0616 for Public Health.

6. Pay the application fee

Once you submit your application, you will receive an email containing a secure e-pay link, allowing you to pay the non-refundable application fee by credit card or e-check.

The MPH/MSW application fee is $100.
