ITTIC DEIAJ Commitment

Trauma-Informed Care provides the framework for all individuals, organizations and systems to engage in Universal Precaution for individuals, historical and systemic trauma by using the values and principles of safety, trustworthiness, choice, collaboration and empowerment.

Universal Precaution - the way organizations, communities, and people can commit to at least not making it worse.

The Institute on Trauma and Trauma-Informed Care acknowledges that we have to be intentional on how we do our part to commit to the betterment and change of our region.

Our Commitment:

ITTIC collaborates with community, state, and global partners in education and training on the use of universal precaution in all of our day to day interactions. In short, universal precaution is the idea of communicating and interacting with others intentionally knowing that we often don't know what has happened to someone else in the room. By interacting with Harris & Fallot's Five Guiding Values and Principles (see image above) of Safety, Trustworthiness, Choice, Collaboration and Empowerment, we are able to ensure that we prevent re-traumatization, or at the very least, don't make interactions worse. By intentionally interacting with others in this way, we are able to fuel connection and empathy for our neighbors, our community, and all different walks of life, ultimately promoting resilience, allyship, equity and healing.

ITTIC commits to the continued integration of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and justice in all of the work we do through:

  • The continued creation of resources and materials that show the correlation between systemic (policies, procedures, structural and institutional racism and oppression) and relationship (power, control, subversiveness, interpersonal racism and oppression) dynamics in both our social environments as well as organizational interactions.
  • Centering this knowledge in the education and trainings that we provide to our partners.
  • Promotion of universal precaution in all of the work that we do.
