The Provost’s Office of Faculty Development & Diversity (OFDD), overseen by the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, provides a wide range of resources, including training and support for individual faculty, department chairs, and deans, in the areas of faculty development and diversity. OFDD works with faculty, chairs, and search committees to improve recruitment and retention practices and to increase diversity in faculty hiring. The office provides guidance to the academic leadership and to individual faculty members on mentoring and the tenure and promotion processes. OFDD also offers professional development programming and grant opportunities for faculty and academic staff. OFDD programs are designed to address research/scholarship, teaching and interpersonal skills necessary for faculty and academics to be successful. OFDD also works to empower faculty to work across social, cultural, and power differences and to promote an inclusive campus climate where all members of our community feel they belong in their learning, research and scholarship, and work environment. We are looking for an Assistant Director of Faculty Development and Diversity. What you will do: Reporting to the Associate Vice Provost, the Assistant Director of Faculty Development and Diversity will collaborate with the units that make up the Academic Diversity Council (Graduate School Office of Inclusion and Student Engagement (OISE), The Intergroup Dialogue Project (IDP), Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI), and the Cornell Interactive Theatre Ensemble (CITE), and be primarily responsible for working with chairs and faculty to assess and enhance department climate, and to design and deliver concrete plans and programs to address areas of concern and enhance areas of strength in addition to co-facilitating ongoing programs offered by OFDD. The incumbent will launch a program aimed enhancing department climate via the following: • Collect and analyze data, including measures of inclusion, well-being, and faculty, staff and student satisfaction. • Identify and connect department faculty, staff and students with support resources in educational and mental health opportunities as appropriate. • Contribute to the development of workshops to support faculty engagement with diverse colleagues, students, members of the staff, and with the broader community. • Facilitate conversations around best practices and action plans to sustain or improve department climate. • Facilitate conversations around department strategic plans to support faculty and students in creating a culture of belonging. Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in Social Work, Human Development, Psychology, or a related field with at least 5 years of experience in curriculum development and program management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience required. • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and partner with a variety of constituents across the university. • Strong collaboration skills; Demonstrated . • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation). • Familiarity and experience working with faculty and academic staff. • Understanding of the role academic leadership (chairs, deans, associate deans). • Demonstrated knowledge of existing research and literature in the areas of the impacts of social identities (such as gender, race, ethnicity, country of origin) and structure on individuals, social climate issues, and academic department cultures. • Must be able to foster constructive dialogue with different groups across campus, build trust, establish ongoing communication structures, and work in collaboration with others; • Must have the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with sensitivity to cultural differences and to interact diplomatically with constituents across campus. • High level of initiative and a flexible and collaborative nature is critical. • Sophisticated judgment, decision making, reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills are imperative. • Demonstrated commitment to working towards and knowledge about how to achieve cultural diversity, inclusion, and equity in academic departments and micro-environments within academic departments (e.g. research labs, studios, etc.). • Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and to meet deadlines. • Proven independent judgement, problem solving and decision-making skills. • Demonstrated analytical skills; attention to detail is important.
