Technology Requirements

All UB students, whether in our online or on-campus degree programs, must have access to a computer and printer. To ensure an optimal learning experience, please confirm your computer and related equipment meet the minimum technology requirements. You must also have basic skills as noted below.

Basic Skills and Proficiencies

  • Internet browsers (eg., Chrome, Firefox)
  • Search engines (eg., Google, Bing)
  • Video conferencing platforms (e.g. Zoom, Microsoft Teams)
  • Internet-based email, including sending attachments
  • Word processing software
  • Cloud storage and file sharing (e.g. Microsoft OneDrive)

Computing Device

*Many courses use video and applications that are not currently supported on tablets, Android or iOS devices, so you will not be able to successfully complete courses using only a mobile device. You may be able to access course websites and some course documents on these devices, but you will need routine access to a computer to make sure you can access all required course content.

Internet Access - Broadband Specs

  • High-speed broadband internet (minimum 25 Mbps download, 5 Mbps upload
  • Reliable Wi-Fi or wired ethernet connection

Learning Management System

Brightspace (UB Learns) is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Free Software

Registered UB students with a UBIT username have free access to the latest academic and productivity software, including Microsoft Office and anti-virus programs. Review the software available before considering any purchases for coursework.
