Bowen recognized as a SSWR fellow

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Elizabeth Bowen, PhD, associate professor in the University at Buffalo School of Social Work, has been inducted as a fellow by the Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR).

The fellowship honors SSWR members for their accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the society and its mission. Founded in 1994, SSWR aims to advance, disseminate and translate research that addresses issues of social work practice and policy and promotes a diverse, equitable and just society. SSWR has over 1,800 members who represent more than 200 universities and institutions around the globe.

A community-based researcher and educator, Bowen has been a member of the UB School of Social Work faculty since 2014. She teaches courses for MSW and DSW students on substance use and addiction, social welfare history and policy, and evidence-based practice.

Bowen’s research examines the intersection of homelessness and health issues, including addiction and recovery, HIV/AIDS and food insecurity. Under a grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, she recently led a multidisciplinary team to develop a new measure of recovery capital — the resources that help people sustain recovery from alcohol and other drug problems.

Bowen also serves as the school’s faculty liaison to the National Homelessness Social Work Initiative.
