The Buffalo News published an opinion piece by Patricia Logan-Greene, associate professor and associate dean for academic affairs in the UB School of Social Work, on the urgent need to protect children from firearm violence at home and in school. Logan-Greene, who serves as co-lead for the national Grand Challenge for Social Work to Prevent Gun Violence, discussed the impact of firearm violence on survivors and communities and outlined tools available to protect kids, including safe storage, public policy and the need for additional research and policy changes.

“In 2020, the United States achieved a grim milestone: Firearms became the leading cause of death for children, surpassing motor vehicle accidents for the first time,” Logan-Greene wrote. “Many may feel helpless in preventing kids from being harmed – indirectly or directly – by firearms. Nevertheless, there are still tools available to protect our children, at home and in school.”
