Practicum Projects and Initiatives

As of fall 2025, field education is now known as practicum education in the School of Social Work. However, you may still see references to “field education” in course titles, documents and other dated web content.

COVID has forced us to re-think traditional practicum models. We in the practicum office are pursuing practicum experiences where students, as part of their existing practicum, complete some supplemental practicum hours working on projects or initiatives with other organizations.

multiple hands signaling teamwork.

Examples of projects or initiatives:

  • Voter outreach and education campaigns and initiatives
  • Providing social and emotional support to isolated individuals
  • Creating a mindfulness curriculum directed at daycare providers
  • Volunteer to provide support to older adults with Canopy of Neighbors
    • For example, lend a hand with simple technology tasks or attend a coffee hour
    • Contact Wendy at Canopy of Neighbors via email or phone (716) 235-8133
  • Get involved with the VaX WNY Research Consortium
    • Research assistants are needed to help inform the local public on COVID vaccine distribution efforts

These projects are intended to supplement a student's practicum experience. For instance, a student may complete 10 hours per week including supervision at their school-based practicum and participate in additional projects outside of the school to help supplement their experience and hours.
