My current interest is in evaluating and researching gambling and drinking issues among Asian immigrant elders. We don’t have any information about this population; with the model minority myth being prevalent in this society, many do not want to acknowledge these addiction problems. It is a human rights issue, though, because this is a marginalized population who needs help. They are experiencing difficulties and we should be able to provide services that they need; if we don’t have any research results showing that they actually need something, we won't be able to do that. People think that when refugees come here, we are serving them. They can contribute a lot, though, if we give them the right environment and support. Additionally, there is an exciting potential of formalizing this synergy of interest among faculty in the area of immigrants and refugees, which would benefit our reach, our community and our school.
