Solidarity with Standing Rock Sioux Tribe

We, the undersigned members of the University at Buffalo School of Social Work community, stand in solidarity with the sovereign Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and their allies in strongly opposing the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
We support the collective human rights of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe enunciated in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. We stand with the Standing Rock Sioux to protect and honor their historic treaties between Oceti Sakowin and the United States. The building of this pipeline without appropriate consultation with the tribal government violates these treaties. We condemn the many manifestations of state-sponsored violence. We condemn the human rights violations perpetrated upon the Indigenous Peoples and allies who have gathered at Standing Rock. We condemn the brutal police tactics that have been used to assault, seriously injure, and dehumanize the unarmed water protectors.
Water is life. We stand with the Standing Rock Sioux to protect a major source of water. Access to clean water is a human right. We stand with the Standing Rock Sioux, many other sovereign Tribes, the United Nations, and many allies to condemn this environmental injustice and to support Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination.
