Safe Exchange Fellowship

A mother talks to her sons.

Elevate your knowledge of direct practice, research and systems related to children and families by participating in the Safe Exchange Fellowship.

Through a partnership between the UB School of Social Work, the City of Buffalo’s Community Crime Prevention Initiative, Family Court and Catholic Charities, advanced year MSW student fellows can help to address the urgent need for access to supervised visitation and safe/monitored exchanges (when one parent transfers their child to another parent in a neutral setting).

Submit your application for the 2025-26 Safe Exchange Fellowship by Feb. 27, 2025.

As a Safe Exchange Fellow, you will:

  • Complete your advanced year field placement, during which you will receive extensive training and facilitate supervised visits and safe exchanges with families. Your field placement will be held during evenings and weekends to provide flexibility with your busy schedule
  • Receive a $7,500 stipend per semester (or $15,000 total)
  • Learn from the experts during biweekly seminars on such topics as child development in the context of family conflict, best practices in supervised visitation, and strategic partnerships to address community need
  • Apply social work principles and theory into practice and use the trauma-informed and human rights perspectives you develop in class to benefit members of our community
  • Examine critical social issues at the macro level, including family systems and poverty, community integration and support, and child welfare in family structures
  • Hone your research and writing skills by drafting letters of intent for potential grants for program sustainability
